Successful Opener in Midland
Jovana advanced to second round of the Dow Corning Classic in Midland, Michigan, a $100,000 ITF event on the USTA Pro Circuit.
Jovana started quickly in her first indoor match of the season, capturing the first set 6-3 in impressive fashion over her younger opponent, 16-year-old American Wild Card entrant Courtney Dolehide. Beyling her youth, however, Dolehide struck back to take the second set 6-4 and even the match. Serving at 4-all in the deciding set, Jovana played some of her best tennis when it counted, striking an ace and holding at 15 to forge ahead and place the pressure back on Dolehide. In the final game with Dolehide serving to stay in the match, Jovana hit two clean forehand winners, including a stunning cross-court laser to seal the deal on match point.
“It was a very tough match,” said Jovana afterwords. ”Dolehide is a strong young player, and I’d never seen her before so I was a bit nervous going in. Plus, the first match in a tournament is always tricky. I am happy that I stayed strong in the most important moments and used my chances when I had them. It is nice to be through to the second round.”
Jovana next faces left handed American Bernarda Pera, formerly of Croatia, for a coveted spot in the quarterfinals.
