Jovana’s close defeat
Jovana suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the first round of Roland Garros, when she was defeated in three tight sets by Daniela Hantuchova.
Playing in her first ever Grand Slam main draw, Jovana came flying out of the blocks and asserted her aggressive game to take the first set 6-2 against her experienced Slovakian opponent.
But Hantuchova, ranked No.32 in the world and a former member of the top 5, steadied the ship and cut out the unforced errors to level at one set all.
Despite leading 4-3 in the final set, Jovana could not cling on for her first Grand Slam victory, and Hantuchova produced some impressive backhand winners and drop shots to clinch the match 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes.
Jovana said afterwards:
“I am really disappointed right now because I had such a great opportunity to win the match. It hurts right now for sure because I wanted it so badly. “She just played the important points towards the end better than I did. I need to make sure I learn from this and work out how to take the next opportunity. I will try to stay positive and keep working hard to get where I want to be.”
