Jovana rings in the New Year with a win
Jovana wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in 2015, winning her first round of qualifying 6-3, 6-2 over World No. 107 Teliana Pereira at WTA Brisbane International, a $1,000,000 WTA Premier event.
After the veteran Brazilian held serve to start the match, Jovana recorded three aces, including a second serve ace, in her opening service game to even things up. From there, each player held to make it 2-all before Jovana struck first with a break of serve. Seizing the early momentum, the 21-year-old Serb would reel off thirteen straight points to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
While serving for the set, however, Jovana faltered on three consecutive set points at 40-0, and eventually dropped serve for the first time in the math. It would prove to be a temporary setback, as Jovana mustered yet another break of serve in the next game to take the opening set in convincing fashion in 37 minutes.
Buoyed by her encouraging form to begin the season, Jovana quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Pereira showed some fight of her own in the fourth game, staving off two break points to stay within range. Undaunted, Jovana promptly held for 4-1, inching ever closer to the finish line.
After a pair of holds by both players, Jovana found herself within one game of a coveted victory at 5-2. Not wasting any time in the hot Australian sun, Jovana proceeded to break serve to close out the match and take a positive first step towards a successful 2015 campaign.
