Jovana falls short against Sakkari
Jovana’s Wimbledon qualifying dreams were crushed by Maria Sakkari after a gallant fight ended in a 7-6 (2) 6-2 defeat at Roehampton.
Jovana pushed the No.5 seed from Greece all the way in the first set, she held points to go 5-3 up, but it was Sakkari who held strong in the tiebreak, taking it for the loss of only two points.
Sakkari was in the ascendance and was able to keep the momentum through the second set, she was the more solid player and clinched the victory and a spot in the final qualifying round after 1 hour and 26 minutes.
“I had a lot of chances and some game points to be 5-3 up, but my serve wasn’t working in the moments I needed it the most,” Jovana said afterwards.
“She is a consistent player and wasn’t giving me too much, I had to work hard for every single point. In the second set I lost a bit of patience and was trying to be more aggressive, but just made more mistakes.
“I’m really happy with my performance on grass over all and it is always the happiest part of my season. I love playing on grass and I’m sad that I lost this match, but happy that my game is getting back to where I want it to be.”
