Jovana battles hard in defeat
Jovana held her head up high after her Fed Cup encounter versus Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium ended in a brave 7-5 6-0 defeat.
Jovana started brilliantly in front of her home crowd in Belgrade, seizing a 3-2 advantage with power and precision from the baseline. But the experienced Belgian hit back to build a 5-3 lead and looked poised to run away with the first set.
Jovana showed her true grit to level at 5-5 however, before Wickmayer took her chances to close the set 7-5.
Wickmayer upped her level in the second set as Jovana faded away, but the Serbian was delighted to have competed well against a top opponent.
“I was really pleased with my level in the first set,” said Jovana. “I just kept fighting and created some chances but was unfortunately unable to take them. She is a top player and I really enjoyed the battle out there today.
“To play at home in front of my people in the arena where I grew up and spend my whole childhood at, I mean that’s precious! Of course I’m sad I didn’t win but I will use this experience as great motivation going forward.”
The World Group II play-off is poised at 1-1 after Alexandra Krunic had earlier put the Serbian team ahead with victory over Kirsten Flipkens.
